They are one of the more difficult and rare enemies in the game, second only to the Mothership. Their weaponry is slightly different compared to the movie. They are armed with two peg launchers on the top of their hulls, and if a Stinger controls a support square, the mothership will launch three shredder drones to attack the target on land.
Each stinger seen in the film represents a human ship class in the battleship board game. For example, the Mothership should be the carrier, the Archer represents the battleship unit as well as the Striker , the Skimmer is the destroyer, and the Lurker is the submarine of the game. The alien stingers were originally created for mining operations purposes, to create caves and large spaces in the rocks of the deeps of Garenon, but most of them have been modified to defend the planet by an unknown and unmentioned alien species that attacked the Garenonian regents.
The 5 stingers seen in the Battleship film were exploration and communication ships, supposed to be fast, agile, robust and stable. They had notable firepower to eventually defend against the humans. The stingers are made with unknown metal alloys and other materials, but the steel they are made of is very similar to the lawrencium. The targeting system is completely autonomous and consists of a friend-enemy recognition system that can also highlight a specific target or engage multiple targets and then shoot simultaneously at each of them, eliminating larger quantities of targets faster.
To serve this purpose, the armaments are strategically located in many points of the stingers, and even though the only weapon used in the film is the peg launcher, they also have seeker missile launchers, torpedo launchers, ballistic missile launchers, long-range plasma cannons, curved trajectory plasma cannons, lateral turrets, and paralyzing peg launchers.
All these weapons guarantee powerful firepower, for both attack and defense. Even if the basic design is the same for each model, the stinger classes have unique features, marks painted on the hull, and colored lights to recognize them. To plays devil advocate on my own devil's advocacy, I have to admit I'm sort of curious to see how Battleship turns out, particularly with Berg at the helm.
I haven't got much hope for Battleship Whiteout screenwriters, Erich and Jon Hoeber writing it doesn't exactly inspire confidence but I'm fully willing to be proven wrong. What do you think of the enemy in the Battleship adaptation being aliens?
Do you think adapting this particular board game into a movie is a good idea? Or is it just another in a long line of those that should just be left in the box?
